Alfredo Melgar of the Filipino Freethinkers blog first came up with a report saying that the emotional speech of Senator Tito Sotto was a plagiarized work. The speech was about the senator’s reason why he cannot accept the claims of the controversial Reproductive Health Bill.

No one ever expected that the speech, that gained him Twitter bashers, will also be the same piece that will put the Philippines to shame.

Parts of the speech were clearly copied from health blogger Sarah Pope of the Health Home Economist blog. He got lines from the  “How The Pill Can Harm Your Future Child’s Health” article.

1. Sotto’s speech (from second to last paragraph):

“According, to Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, the use of the pill also causes severe gut dysbiosis. What is worse, drug induced gut imbalance is especially intractable and resistant to treatment either with probiotics or diet change.”

Sarah’s blog:

“According, to Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, use of other drugs such as the Pill also cause severe gut dybiosis. What’s worse, drug induced gut imbalance is especially intractable and resistant to treatment either with probiotics or diet change.”

2. Sotto’s speech:

“Gut imbalance brought on through use of the pill negatively impacts the ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. As a result, even if a woman eats spectacularly well during pregnancy, if she has been taking oral contraceptives for a period of time beforehand, it is highly likely that she and her baby are not reaping the full benefits of all this healthy food as the lack of beneficial flora in her gut preclude this from occurring.”

3. Sotto’s speech:

“Pathogenic, opportunistic flora that take hold in the gut when the pill is used constantly produce toxic substances which are the by-products of their metabolism. These toxins leak into the woman’s bloodstream and they have the potential to cross the placenta. Therefore, gut dysbiosis exposes the fetus to toxin.”

These toxins leak into the woman’s bloodstream and guess what, they have the potential to cross the placenta! Therefore, gut dysbiosis exposes the fetus to toxins.”

4. Sotto’s speech:

“Not well known is also the fact that use of the pill depletes zinc in the body. Zinc is called ‘the intelligence mineral’ as it is intimately involved in mental development.”

Minutes ago, Sarah learned about her work copied for a speech. She wrote on her Facebook fan page:

“A Senator in the Philippines plagiarized one of my blog posts to use in a speech. Can't even believe this!!!”

Comments started pouring, asking the blogger to teach the Filipino politician a lesson. Some were saying the senator is now a laughing stock in the Philippines. Others concluded Sotto is a big disgrace to his country.

Another Facebook user remarked:

"Please make it known. The senator in question keeps denying he's done anything wrong. I apologize how the person seems to be thinking he's better than anyone else and that copying you is nothing bad. I'm sure this must be horrible to hear for you, but politicians around the world are definitely cut from the same cloth."

Obviously, Sotto has already started ruining his political career. His moves against the RH Bill are pulling him down.

This scandal is unforgiveable. Sotto committed a crime- to a foreigner. Sotto can be charged with plagiarism.  And he is guilty of this!

Who really copied the piece without asking for permission from the blogger?

Think again.

It was not Sotto. It was his Public Relations man or publicist or secretary or ghost writer or secretary or whatever we call him/her who wrote his speech.

His crime is for letting his representative do a crime, and reading a speech that contains facts copied illegally from a blog article. Hmmm, no more 2013 elections for the senator! But at least, he still has Eat Bulaga.

Update: Senator Tito Sotto, who clearly copied a blog article for a speech, is denying the accusation. He told ABS-CBN News Channel that he took the ideas in his speech from Dr. Natasha Campbell-Mcbride, not from Sarah who wrote the blog article involved in the scandal.

“Why should I quote a blogger,” expressed the Senator who is trying to add more sins to his God and his countrymen.

Pachyderm! If Sotto was really quoting McBride, why is it that we never heard him give credit to the doctor during the speech?

Bottom line, Sotto is trying to defend his ill name after what he has done. Pachyderm Sotto! He has layers of guts to bring us to this deep shame!

All he needs to do is to give an apology for the mistake. It won’t hurt him. It won’t hurt his daughter Ciara. It won’t hurt his political career, since everyone knows that everyone commits mistakes.
