With fingers crossed, my family’s world stopped for a moment. A blood test from Manila confirmed that my Aunt Esther’s illness was upgraded to the worst type of leukemia.

My aunt received expensive medications hoping she could recover from the cancer. Her hair started falling, so she always wore a bonnet (her beauty was preserved). She could no longer maintain her backyard garden.

I transformed into a caregiver (the sexiest caregiver ?!?). I learned how to place adult diaper and how to read labels of medicines. I did researches and was immune to the smell of human waste. I found myself preparing for examinations inside the hospital and arguing with a nurse after we were billed with an “untaken” dextrose (Oh that was really fun).

My aunt passed away months after. She left me with insights about life to live upon.

Last June, I learned about 18-year old Charles Ansibey (a former schoolmate in Sagada) getting diagnosed with the same type of leukemia my aunt had. That was totally heartbreaking. I spearheaded a campaign to raise funds for his medication. Thanks to tens of friends and strangers who are until now helping Charles.

If you are sick of cancer, your financial resources will be drained for sure.  Prescriptions, chemo therapy, radiation, bone marrow extraction and other medical procedures are quite expensive (how we wish were all born rich).

However, that is just money. The truth is money is an easy pie. We can look for money in many ways.

The real challenges are two:

1.    The sincerity of the doctor in giving prescriptions and recommending medical procedures. I know there are doctors who abuse the desperate need of cancer patients to get well. You know what I mean with this when you encounter a doctor slash networking agent.

2. Support system from family. A patient will not face cancer alone. The warmth of every family member and the spirit of camaraderie are needed. In short, you need a parcel of time and care from your family members who are very busy with their personal life and career.

Moreover, it is a known fact that more than 80% of people afflicted with cancer are really concerned about the side effects of medical procedures.
