Engr. Jupiter C. Dominguez

Jupiter “Jup” Coto-ong Dominguez is an Igorot/Cordilleran politician from Sabangan, a town in Mountain Province, Philippines. He served as Mayor of his town twice. This 2013 Elections, he is running for Congressman.

Dominguez comes from a prominent Cordilleran family known in politics, after his late uncle Victor who is media-dubbed as the region’s “Father of Modern Politics”.

Earlier Life

Jupiter Dominguez was born on April 25, 1965 in Sabangan to Jose “Celing” Sicado Dominguez and Imelda Coto-on. He is third in the family.  His father is the former Vice Governor of the province. His mother comes from Sagada, a popular tourist destination in the province.

Dominguez is married to Janet Zarate of Lagan, Sabangan. Their children are Jenne, Kim, Dyne, Celing, Jethro and Justine.

He attended studied at St. Joseph Elementary School and San Alfonso High School; both schools are located in Sabangan. He took up Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at Saint Louis University in Baguio City.

Political Career

Jupiter Dominguez was elected unopposed as the municipal mayor of Sabangan in 2001. He was re-elected in 2004, thus serving until 2007. Under his leadership in 2004, Sabangan was awarded the “Most Outstanding Municipality” in the country. 

Before his first attempt for a Congress seat, he clashed against his uncle and then Congressman Victor Dominguez. The latter supported the demolition of an Anglican chapel in Sabangan. The controversy became a top topic during political rallies in the 2007 elections with the two Dominguezes running for Congressman. Despite having a better publicity, Jupiter lost to his uncle.

In 2010, Dominguez ran again for Congress but former Mountain Province governor Maximo Dalog won the position, with a difference of 751 votes. His 2010 campaign advocacy was centered on education, employment, environment and infrastructure development. He proposed for a modification of the scholarship program in the province-run Mountain Province Poly-technique College (MPSPC). He also prioritized the improvement of the Dantay (Bontoc)- Sagada- Tadian Road.

Currently, he is vying for the same position for the third time.
