A Tale of Gout- and the Unsolicited Sick Leave

For three days, I have stayed inside my room in Paranaque bearing an unbearable pain in my left foot. I thought the pain would cease after a day just like in my past attacks- I was wrong.

Every summer for three straight year here in Metro Manila, I find myself under the spell of gout. My foot swells and the excruciating pain removes the smile on my face. Gout leaves me immobile.

On the third day at the demand of my boss, I called my younger brother to accompany me to the hospital. At UniHealth Hospital, I was told that no Avega- accredited specialist is around. We transferred to Paranaque Medical Center which eventually turned us down also for the same reason. At Olivares Hospital, we headed to the Emergency Room where I was given a shot of painkiller. Since no specialist was around that time, too, no further treatment was provided to me. We went home before 10 in the evening.

Gout is caused by excessive eating of pork, beef, animal intestines, beans, alcohol, coffee, etc.  After that heavenly feeling of finishing a bowl of delicious pork, the hell-like situation starts.

Last Tuesday, I forced myself to go to work so I had to call a workmate to ride me on his motorcycle. The way I walk was really funny.

This morning, there is still much pain in my ankle. I still have not seen the doctor yet. I will on Sunday during my day off.

As a pre-Mother's Day message, my mom sent me a long SMS to remind of my diet. I promised myself to go jogging once I am 100% recovered. Deal?
