Dani Girl Returns to Torture Your Heart (Again)

What if God is another fairy tale?

Time froze for many times during the showing of Dani Girl, the newest offering at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza.

While there is complete innocence in the voice of the musical’s two major characters, Dani and Marty, what they were uttering were too harsh in the ears of an adult in the audience.

Dani Girl is a show about kids, but actually not made for kids. It follows the imaginary ordeal of Danica and Marty in finding the answer as to why they had the Big C. Leukemia to be exact.

When A.L.L. was mentioned at the start of the show, I already knew that some sort of torture has started. I am aware of this that abbreviation, it was the very type of blood cancer that got one of my aunts.

Never go see the show without a handkerchief or a pile of napkins, as you will experience genuine pain as the show progresses. But take note, the show is also highly entertaining with the help of contemporary movies including Indiana Jones and Star Wars.

While watching, crying was not an option for me, since I believe the fight has to be won first before doing that dramatic scene. And how can I cry if I, myself is part of a very similar situation. Oh, I know I am making no sense here.

Okay, let me tell you why.

On my birthday this year, my nephew Kendrick was born. It was supposed to be an all-day celebration. But on the very second he was welcomed to the world, the nurses knew he needed the help of the ICU to get going.

Kendrick is surviving on life support now. He was finally allowed to go home to Sagada so our folks can take good care of him.  His every second is relied on the oxygen tank, medicines, and other healthcare essentials.

Kendrick is battling with Dandy- Walker, a rare malformation in the brain. This condition affects 1 in 10,000- 30,000 newborns.

What did he do to deserve it? It was the same question that Danica and Marty asked themselves.

The show scored that fairy tales leave delight to children with the happy-ending pattern. And the show makes us, adults realize we tell fairy tales for the kids to feel good. But the show also challenged the story of God—what if it was another fairy tale?

Dani Girl is produced by 9 Works Theatrical and Sandbox CollectiveToff De Venecia did the directing.

Thanks to fellow blogger, Axl Guinto for sharing his press tickets with me. I must commend the acting of Felecity Kyle Napuli who played Dani. Daniel Drilon (Mary, Dani’s roommate), Pam Imperial (Dani’s mother) and Juliene Mendoza (Rah, Dani’s guardian angel) also did a great job.

Upon checking on the list of other actors, I was thrilled to see Lorenz Martinez as an alternative to Juliene. Lorenz was really great as King Arthur in Spamalot.
